Economic Rationale for Industrial Policy in Developing Countries
Matyáš, David ; Klosová, Anna (advisor) ; Araujo, Ricardo (referee)
This thesis goes through basic principles of industrial policy in developing countries and analyses examples of recent industrial policies in BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) in the last two decades. The analysis shows the coexistence of unsuccessful and fruitful stories of industrial policy implementation. In the text, I focus especially on the last two decades. I recognize that industrial policy can have a positive impact on economy in some cases, but on the other hand, government failures are frequent and they can result in deep distortions of economic systems and waste of resources. Since 90s', pro-active approach positively contributed to the growth primarily in China and India -- although the progress of these two countries differs substantially. These two countries were (and still are) relatively poorer than Russia and Brazil. Typically, industrial policy in BRIC countries broadly overrides problems of corporate governance, corrupt practices and bureaucratic burdens.
Competitiveness of Czech industry in EU
Kratochvíl, Jakub ; Klosová, Anna (advisor) ; Dúbravská, Pavla (referee)
Czech Republic has been always traditional industrial country and the importance of its industry will not diminish, even in spite of the growing share of services on GDP. The goal of this thesis is therefore to analyze strong and weak points of Czech manufacturing and its particular sectors. Measuring various indicators of macroeconomic competitiveness, the results for the Czech Republic have revealed relatively low labour costs, at least in comparison with the EU average, but this comparative advantage can be depleted over time. The challenge for the Czech manufacturing is thus to pass over to upper levels of production with higher margins and higher value added. The thesis is also dealing with different points of view on the topic of industrial policy and the role of government in this policy. The thesis introduces two strategical documents as well, Europe 2020 strategy published by the European Commission and Back on Top strategy published by Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Slunčík, Peter ; Lang, Helmut (advisor) ; Dvořáček, Jiří (referee) ; Smrček, Antonín (referee)
ABSTRACT The subject of this doctoral thesis is a framework for building an industrial policy for sustainable competitiveness of the glass industry in the Czech Republic. Industrial policy and competitiveness do not have commonly accepted definitions. Concepts on definitions differ across nations, regions, stage of development and over time -- in short or long time. Coming from these problems there are questions connected with horizontal or sectoral level of application. Globalization is a challenge for industry, the environmental issues alike. On one hand side is there enormous growth of costs on the other growth of business opportunities. Systemic approach to analysis of the complex of business environment brought progress to solve problems connected with articulation integrated levels. A complete analysis of the glass industry enables to understandnot only problems but also challenges driving the industry. Quality of political environment and mutual collaboration with all the actors is crusial for next development of succesful sustainable growth of the national economy. There is not the question if to do the industrial policy or not; the question is: how to do it?
Industrial policy - sectoral structure of the national economy
Trtíková, Eva ; Tyll, Ladislav (advisor) ; Doláková, Helena (referee)
In his thesis work: Industrial policy sectoral structure of the national economy, I will mainly deal with the industry in the Czech Republic. Focus is also on the sector classification of economic entities, namely on how businesses can be classified. Look at the famous classification of NACE, CZ-NACE, and others. Furthermore, I deal with small and medium-sized business, since this is considered business as a "lung" economy. Today, I can not miss the current financial crisis, it will be my next question. My aim is to determine how many economic entities taking, in which the region is the most business and which on the contrary, at least, as it is with foreigners in the Czech Republic, how much business births and deaths and many more. Last but not least, I focused on the industry in the Czech Republic, the type of questions about what to look for, what sees this problem and vice versa včem not be too interested in me.
